And just like that, we’re at the start of 2023. There’s something so incredibly optimistic about the beginning of a new year. Our slates have been wiped clean to make room for a new set of 365 days to be spent however we wish. Now, you can either read that fact with a sense of dread, or with pure positivity.

And just like that, we’re at the start of 2023. There’s something so incredibly optimistic about the beginning of a new year. Our slates have been wiped clean to make room for a new set of 365 days to be spent however we wish. Now, you can either read that fact with a sense of dread, or with pure positivity. Either way, 2023 is here and it’s time to start shifting gears and thinking about annual planning.

What is Annual Planning?

Annual planning is essentially developing the strategy for your business to holistically plan for the year ahead and outline the goals and actions that you set forth. This is the time to start outlining how you and your team will move forward with the intention to maximize the potential of your business. This can look like increasing profits by X or growing your customer base by 10%, or offering more services and products. Whatever you envision for your business, now is the time to put pen to paper and start aligning your strategies with your actions for the year ahead.

Benefits

By intentionally putting together an annual plan, you’ll begin to reap the benefits and rewards of what the future will bring. Below are just some of the ways that you can begin to see the advantages of implementing an annual plan.

Sets Goals & Objectives

It can be overwhelming and daunting to move forward without clearly outlining what it is you wish to accomplish. It’s very important to start your annual plan by identifying what you want to focus on for your business. Use the SMART goals tactic and create specific and attainable goals that you can accomplish over the next year.

Improves Communication

By creating a roadmap, you can effectively communicate what your objectives are and how your business will achieve them. An essential part of having your team on the same page is ensuring that all communication is clear and aligned. There is an implied alignment that comes from completing an annual plan and it will be the foundation of how your team moves and operates.

Intention

With a clearly planned vision, you and your team will know exactly how to progress and build upon goals throughout the year. There is no more moving with ambiguity but rather moving with a sense of purpose and understanding that all goals will build towards the next step.

Measures Results

Having identified your objectives, you can begin to track the progress and status of your plan. If changes need to be made, you can always revise or iterate as the year progresses, keeping your goals in line and flexible without losing focus.

Increases Efficiency

Using a roadmap to navigate the trenches of growing or expanding your business will increase efficiency on every level. Implementing an annual plan allows you to understand how every part of your business operates which means that it will become easier to modify and organize down the line.

Supports Accountability

Leaving little room for misalignment, having an annual plan helps to assign responsibility and hold accountability for yourself and team members.

Sets You Up For Next Year

What you create and plan for this year, will only set you up for success the following year. You’ll be able to assess and reflect on the results of your goals which will help to inform how you pivot your annual plan.
